Are you in a wardrobe rut? Two fashionistas say the secret to style is putting together an outfit with these very basic elements — color, texture, shine, and pattern.

Wardrobe Stylist Bridget Boggess says always leave the house with at least three of the following in your outfit: color, texture, shine, and pattern. Then, when it comes to accessorizing, The Vintage Contessa, Donae Chramosta says consider juxtaposition and scale.

Start with a plain white button-down shirt and pencil skirt and add an animal print cardigan. You can increase texture with tights. Layer on a red belt, large strand of pearls, and a black tote. For night, take the same skirt and shirt, add a pair of spiked heels, a jacket with texture and shine, gold necklace, and a clutch.

Transform your basic t-shirt and jeans by adding a trench. Make it a tone-on-tone look by adding a green belt, an emerald statement necklace, and muted lime bag. For the evening, add a vintage-inspired pink and cream textured coat, a faux fur collar, and colorful matching jewelry.

Finally, to spice up a little black dress, add a purple velvet jacket. Belt it with a wide faux snake-skin belt with a bit of metallic and then add black button earrings and a big cocktail ring for some juxtaposition. To transition this for an evening event, Bridget and Donae say it’s OK to create a look around an accessory if it’s a statement piece. Start with an oversized leather and Lucite-looking necklace, then add a cream leather jacket, other mixed metal accessories and Lucite bracelets on the wrist.
